About World Resources Institute
Using research-based approaches, World Resources Institute (WRI) works globally and in focus countries to meet people’s essential needs; to protect and restore nature; and to stabilize the climate and build resilient communities. They aim to fundamentally transform the way the world produces and uses food and energy and designs its cities to create a better future for all.
About Their AI Solution
WRI, in partnership with Google, created Dynamic World, a near realtime 10-meter resolution global land use land cover dataset, produced using deep learning, freely available and openly licensed. Dynamic World is produced using Google Earth Engine, a cloud-based geospatial analysis platform that enables users to visualize and analyze satellite images of our planet. The model can, for example, estimate the degree of tree cover, how built up a particular area is, or snow coverage if there’s been a recent snowstorm. This tool is intended to be used as a data product for users to add custom rules with which to assign final class values, producing derivative land cover maps.
